2009 SENIOR DESIGN GROUP MEMBERS


Ammara Abbasi

Program Alumnus

Ammara Abbasi was born in Pakistan and grew up in Atlanta, GA. She went to Emory University for college and medical school and plan to pursue a career in General Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess, Harvard Medical School this coming fall. Her aim is to become a surgical oncologist and leader in the field of global surgical care improvement.

Griffin Baum is a newly matched resident into the Neurosurgery Residency program at Emory University School of Medicine. Griffin graduated in 2011 from Emory School of Medicine and previously attended Emory College for his undergraduate degree.

Beena Bhuiyan-Khan

Program Alumnus

Beena Bhuiyan Khan was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico where she completed her primary and secondary school education. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Georgia Tech in Biomedical Engineering. During this time Beena had the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. LaBorde in two projects—one concerning health economics and the other health policy. The knowledge and experience she gained by working with Dr. LaBorde was instrumental in helping her decide on her future career. Currently, Beena is pursuing a Masters degree in Health Policy, Planning, and Financing in LSE and conducting research with the European Health Technology Institute for Socio-Economic Research.

Theodora Brandon

Program Alumnus

Theodora Brandon is a medical student at the Medical College of Georgia/University of Georgia Partnership campus in Athens. She graduated in 2010 from Georgia Tech with a B.S. in Biology after fulfilling her senior research experience with Dr. LaBorde. She hope to specialize in Infectious Diseases and one day work as an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.

Argo Dalapati is currently a third year Biomedicial Engineering student at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has worked in various labs throughout Emory and Georgia Tech such as Dr. Robert Gross's lab along with Dr. Gutman's lab.

Jason Faulk

Jason Faulk graduated from Georgia Tech in the Spring of 2010 with a B.S. in Computer Science. He has worked with Dr. LaBorde on various projects since 2009 and has co-founded IDS LLC with him. He currently works as the Lead Developer at IDS in Atlanta, GA.

Maria Amoreth Ramiro Gozo

Program Alumnus

Amoreth Gozo is currently a fourth year undergraduate biomedical engineering student at Georgia Tech. Under Dr. LaBorde, she has had the opportunity to examine the effects of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) via the rates of thromboembolic complications (TEC) as well as to analyze the safety and efficacy of bone morphogenic protein on posterolateral spinal fusion. In addition to research, she is also involved in several organizations around campus, acting as Vice President to Student Hospital Connections to provide volunteering opportunities and safe transportation to nearby hospitals. Moreover, as a founding member of the Public Speaking Club, Amoreth helps provide an outlet for students who want to gain confidence in their interviewing, presenting, and speaking skills. Other leadership experiences she has include being a teaching assistant for Biostatistics, a team leader for GT1000 Freshman Class, a BME Ambassador, and a player for the Georgia Tech Women’s Rugby team.

Jackie Griffin

Current Program Participant

Jackie Griffin received a BS and M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University. Currently, she is pursuing her PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Her research interests include the use of mathematical modeling for decision making in health care delivery. Specifically, she has researched the impact of infrastructure and logistics in the equitable delivery of health care in Africa. Additionally, she has completed projects to improve patient flow and evaluate the potential value of Health Information Exchange (HIE) implementation in Atlanta hospitals. Jackie is both an ARCs (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Scholar and a Georgia Tech President’s Fellow and has received the National Defense Transportation Association Scholarship as well as the George Fellowship.

Andrew Guyton

Andrew Guyton is a Computer science graduate of Georgia Tech with years of experience in C/C++/MFC/C# through co-op work at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. He is now employed as a Network Data Analyst by Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas.

Taylor Holbrook

Current Program Participant

Taylor Holbrook is currently a third-year student at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Taylor was fortunate enough to receive a full-ride through the President's Scholarship, Georgia Tech's top merit-based scholarship. Taylor is working to earn her B.S. in Biology with a focus in pre-medicine, as well as a minor in Spanish. In addition to her research with Dr. David Laborde, Taylor also enjoys her research in Dr. Francesca Storici's genetics lab at Georgia Tech. Taylor is so thrilled to work towards fulfilling her life-long dream of becoming a physician, perhaps specializing in dermatology or neurosurgery.

Adam Hull

Current Program Participant

Adam Hull is currently a first year medical student attending the Georgia Campus of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He received his Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Georgia. His undergraduate training was completed at Michigan State University where he received a B.S. in Psychology. It was during his time at UGA where he began working with Dr. LaBorde on their research project. They have produced one poster from the project so far with another poster and a paper still in the works.

Nayan Jain

Senior Design Team Member

Nayan Jain is a Georgia Tech computing alum devoted to changing the world with technology. During his time in Georgia, Nayan worked at an Atlanta-based retail optimization firm as a human-computer interaction advisor. His background in user experience and design led to his startup career in the propane industry. Developing rich internet applications became a pastime; building up to his work at Georgia Tech's Experimental Game Lab and a medical CRM designed for Emory Neuroscience. As a result, healthcare web apps became a passion and is currently the Director of Mobile Technology at Audax Health in Washington, DC.

Jack Kinney attended the Georgia Institute of Technology from 2005 to 2009, majoring in Computer Science. Soon after graduation in the Fall of 2009, he began working for Accenture in Atlanta, GA as a Software Engineer.

Shruti Kumar

Current Program Participant

Shruti Kumar is a first year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Georgia campus. She has been working with Dr. LaBorde for the past two years on research projects regarding external ventricular drain placement and the rate of ventriculitis. A Georgia Tech alumna, Shruti was very involved with volunteer service and held several leadership positions in college. She hopes to pursue a career in primary care medicine and continue to serve her community.

Iviensan Manalo

Program Alumnus

Iviensan Manalo will be completing her BS in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Tech in spring 2011. She has teamed with Dr. LaBorde, Maria Amoreth Gozo, and Dhruti Patel on two retrospective clinical research projects: 1) analyzing the safety and efficacy of bone morphogenic protein on posterolateral spinal fusion and 2) examining the effects of creatinine clearance on low molecular weight heparin dosing in subarachnoid hemorrhage patients. At Georgia Tech, she was President of Student Hospital Connections (providing students volunteering opportunities and safe transportation to Atlanta hospitals) and a founding member to two organizations: Public Speaking Club and Stamps Health Services Ambassador Organization. As treasurer of the Public Speaking Club, she ensured that funds were always available and provided students the opportunity to gain confidence in their interviewing and public speaking skills. As Vice President of Internal Affairs of the Stamps Health Services Ambassador Organization, she provided students the opportunity to volunteer, shadow, and be active right on-campus at the Georgia Tech Health Center. She also served as a Teaching Assistant for a Biomedical Engineering Design course and traveled to Europe for the first time as a student in the Georgia Oxford Study Abroad Program. Outside of classes, she enjoys dancing salsa and Bollywood, spending time with friends and family, and learning about new cultures.

Melissa McDonald

Program Alumnus

Melissa McDonald graduated with a BS in Biology from Georgia Tech in May 2010. For her senior research project, she worked with Dr. Robert Gross and Dr. LaBorde to develop a survey for Parkinson's disease patients to explore their attitudes towards DBS and ablation therapy. Melissa currently works with D3 Oncology Solutions in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Vivek Menon

Current Program Participant

Vivek Menon was born and raised in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (U.A.E). After completing his high school, he moved to Europe. He graduated magna cum laude and received the degree of MD (Doctor of Medicine) from the renowned Charles University in Prague, which is the second oldest University in Europe. He moved to Atlanta 4 years ago and has been doing Clinical research with the Departments of Neurosurgery and Cardiology at Emory University. Vivek's research interest is broad and spans from Intracranial malignancies to endothelial dysfunction of the Cardiovascular system. He is a very vibrant young physician/researcher and is a great asset to our team.

Partrick Mulligan

Current Program Participant

Patrick Mulligan is originally from Titusville, FL. He received a B.S in Biology from Emory University. He is currently a third year medical student at Emory University planning to persue a residency in neurological surgery after graduation. His past research projects have been varied, and include neuro-oncology and neuroscience basic research, and endocrinology clinical research. He is currently interested in neurosurgical clinical and translational research. His hobbies outside of school include playing/watching sports, surfing, fishing, and flying.

Tara Jayde Nail

Current Program Participant

Jayde Nail is a third year Psychology student studying at Georgia Tech. Upon graduating, she plan to attend medical school. She has a passion for learning and neuroscience research. She also conducts research in the Cognitive Neuroscience Tech Research Laboratory (CoNTRoL), a Georgia Tech Psychology Lab. Outside of academics, she has a passion sports and plays any chance she gets.

Daxa M. Patel

Program Alumnus

Daxa M. Patel’s hometown is Marietta, Georgia. She received an A.B. degree magna cum laude with double majors in Biology and Economics and a minor in classics from Northwestern University. She then obtained an M.D. degree cum laude from Emory University. Currently, she is pursuing her neurological surgery residency at University of Alabama in Birmingham. Her research interests include pediatric neurosurgery and neuro-oncology. Specifically, she is researching the impact of serial CSF sampling in ventriculostomies on risk of infections in patients at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. Additionally, she has completed variety of reviews and reports that range from intracranial metastatic neuroblastoma treated with radiosurgery to a brainstem arteriovenous malformation eradicated with gamma-knife therapy. Her future goals include further understanding and investigating the treatment of arteriovenous malformations, surgical treatment of epilepsy, and neurological infectious diseases in children.

Gauthami Penakalalapati

Program Alumnus

Gauthami Penakalalapati graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelors in Biology. Afterwards, she decided to take a break from academia, so she moved to Los Angeles to work with City Year, an AmeriCorps Organization. In Los Angeles, she has worked in two urban middle schools in low-income areas of South LA as a mentor and tutor. This coming fall, she plan to pursue her Masters in Public Health.

David James Polhemus is a senior at Emory and will be graduating in the fall of 2011 with majors in Economics and Chemistry. He is originally from San Francisco, born and raised. After graduating, he plans on taking a year off before applying to medical school. During that time, he will be involved with research at Yerkes National Primate Center attempting to determine the behavioral and neurochemical effects of several doses of cocaine and amphetamine in squirrel monkeys. Some of his hobbies are baseball, drums, and cooking. He also plans to coach baseball next year in his spare time.

Jaskaran Rakkar

Jaskaran Rakkar is currently pursuing a Bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His extracurriculars range from hospital volunteering to academic research. He is an active member of Biomedical Engineering Society, Engineering World Health, Tau Beta Pi, American Medical Student Association and Alpha Eta Mu Beta. Jaskaran’s research focus is in the field of neurosurgery and general health care operations. He plans to attend medical school after completing his undergraduate study at Georgia Tech.

Nathan Rowland

Program Alumnus

Dr. Nathan Rowland was born in Augusta, GA. His father was a dentist who soon established a private practice in Atlanta, where the family moved. His mother worked as a nurse. His love for medicine was firmly rooted in the stories his mother and father would tell of their experiences in the medical and dental fields. He studied hard and graduated valedictorian of his high school class. He went on to pursue a Biology Major and English Minor at Morehouse College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He decided to develop both his love of medicine and his passion for research by entering Emory University's combined MD/PhD program. There, he was able to publish several journal articles and also won numerous awards, including a National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the NIH. Having finished his MD and PhD, he and his wife have moved to the Bay Area where he is a second year resident in the Department of Neurological Surgery. There he hopes to fulfill his dream of becoming an academic neurosurgeon and continuing his quest for an ever deeper understanding of the human brain.

Shadeah Laila Suleiman

Current Program Participant

Shadeah is an uplifting and inspirited young lady who is very passionate about complementary and alternative medicine and its patron, nutrition. She finds the greatest satisfaction in making even small differences in personal lives. Shadeah also spends much of her free time as an avid ballerina and competitive ballroom & Latin dancer and writes a blog reviewing the Boston, Cambridge dance scene and its goings-on. After just graduating in August 2010 from the Georgia Institute of Technology after 3 years, she now coordinates a phase II clinical trial at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center before continuing onto higher medical or graduate education.
